The book has a double purpose : first, it describes and analyses homosexual history in the Netherlands, in particular since the 13th century - in that it was the first general history of Dutch homosexual oppression. Secondly, it contributes to a philosophy of sexual oppression, as developed by Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault and Jos van Ussel. Key-notion is sexual individualization. The “making of the homosexual”, as described by Foucault and others, is given another meaning : it is not medical conceptualization that created homosexual individuals, but individuals that created medical concepts.
