: Een analyse van de maatschappelijke onderdrukking van de homoseksualiteit

The book has a double purpose : first, it describes and analyses homosexual history in the Netherlands, in particular since the 13th century - in that it was the first general history of Dutch homosexual oppression. Secondly, it contributes to a philosophy of sexual oppression, as developed by Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault and Jos van Ussel. Key-notion is sexual individualization. The “making of the homosexual”, as described by Foucault and others, is given another meaning : it is not medical conceptualization that created homosexual individuals, but individuals that created medical concepts. So what did create homosexual individuals? The book argues that homo-aversion individualized first. It changed from a simple prohibition into a personality-constituent characteristic, i.e. into a heterosexual identity. This took place in what Elias described as the rise of the “Über-ich”, the controll of instincts necessary for building highly complicated social life.
