A utilização de dados SPOT Vegetação para evidenciar a expansão e a intensificação da agricultura no Mato Grosso

This expansion leads to obvious environmental and socio-economical<br />consequences such as deforestation or urban growth. The goal of this study is to evaluate how the remote sensing techniques, and especially the NDVI, can be used to analyze the extension of soybean's fields in Mato Grosso and the transformation of agriculture in this State. The NDVI is obtained from the SPOT-Vegetation satellite on monthly time series (maximum value composition at a 1 km spatial resolution). It enables localizing the cultivated areas and is an indicator of the crop's growth. It also allows detecting the double cropping management practice which is increasing in this area since a few years. The results show a correlation of 0.98 between our estimation of crop superficies and IBGE's datas for the whole Mato Grosso. The NDVI's time<br />series also confirm the increase of double cropping systems representing 30% of the cultivated areas in 1999, 57% in 2006 and 72% in 2007, showing the diversification and the intensification of agriculture in this region.<br />Finally, the monitoring of recently deforested large fields in a defined county (Vera) show a gap reduction<br />between the three successive stages leading to intensified agricultural practices, i.e. forest clearing, first crop plantation and first adoption of double cropping practice
