Migrations albanaises en Grèce : stratégies migratoires et modes d'adaptation.<br />Le cas de Thessalonique

Date de rédaction: septembre 2008Albanian migration in Greece, initiated by the fall of the communist regime in Albania, could be qualified as unique not only for its intensity and for the large numbers of persons it involves, but also for some particularities of the Albanian immigrants in Greece: they adopt some practices and attitudes rather surprising or, at least, somewhat “unusual”. Those practices concern, on one hand, a concealment of their Albanian identity, via the name and/or religion changing; on the other hand, they imply Albanians' spatial “invisibility” as a group, mainly expressed by their households' broad diffusion into the urban territory of Thessaloniki (the second largest metropolis after the Greek capital, and also our field of study), and the absence of an ethicised district within the same city. The purpose of this thesis is the exploration of those phenomena, the conditions under which they were generated, as well as their consequences. As far as we are concerned, we propose that those phenomena are the various components of the same coping strategy of Albanian immigrants in Greece. To what extent is this strategy related to the Albanians' cultural orientations? What is the role played by the socio-political structure of the immigration country in the generation of such strategies? Such a dilemma, does it really exist? In this work, we strive to demonstrate that the strategies in question are the result of a multiplicity of factors related both to the new immigrants' culture, their pre-migration history and their relations with their compatriots in the country of immigration, and also to the general social climate and the migration policies in Greece.Les migrations des Albanais en Grèce, amorcées suite à la chute du régime communiste en Albanie, peuvent être qualifiées d'exceptionnelles aussi bien par leur intensité et leur importance arithmétique que par l'évolution particulière des migrants, qui entreprennent quelques pratiques et attitudes assez étonnantes, ou du moins peu « habituelles ». Ces dernières concernent, d'une part, une dissimulation identitaire, qui passe par le changement de prénom et/ou de religion ; elles impliquent, d'autre part, l'invisibilité spatiale des Albanais en tant que groupe, essentiellement traduite par la diffusion de leurs ménages dans le territoire urbain de Thessalonique (deuxième plus importante métropole grecque après la capitale, et notre terrain d'enquête), et par l'absence d'un quartier ethnicisé dans cette même ville. L'objet de cette thèse porte sur l'exploration de ces phénomènes, les conditions sous lesquelles ils ont été générés, aussi bien que leurs conséquences. Pour notre part, nous proposons que ces phénomènes forment les diverses composantes d'une même stratégie d'adaptation des migrants albanais en Grèce. Dans quelle mesure cette stratégie s'attache aux orientations culturelles des Albanais ? Est-ce la structure du pays d'immigration qui la fait générer ? Un tel dilemme se pose-t-il véritablement ? Lors de ce travail, nous nous efforçons de démonter que les stratégies en question sont la conséquence d'une multiplicité des facteurs liés tant à la culture des nouveaux-arrivants, leur histoire pré-migratoire et leurs relations avec leurs compatriotes aux pays d'immigration, qu'au climat social général et aux politiques migratoires en Grèce
