Recognizing spoken words containing shorter embedded words involves solving a problem of word boundaries location in the audio stream.<br />The research presented in this doctoral thesis suggests that lexical segmentation results from both bottom up prosodic constraints and top-down internal constraints due to the structure of the lexicon.<br />Results show that:<br />- A prosodic code carried by the syllable strongly constrains the lexical processing;<br />- Lexical embedding at the initial of a word facilitates its recognition.<br />SLEXS, a mathematical model of spoken word perceptual salience, is proposed to explain this facilitation, and links it to a recursive process of percept building.
