It has been argued that speakers would be able to use their knowledge about phonotactic or syllabic regularities in the process of segmenting speech into words. However, a distributional analysis of the frequency of consonant clusters in a French computerised lexicon reveals a strong relationship between the phonological structure of consonant sequences and their frequency of occurrence in the language's words. On the average, tautosyllabic or phonotactically legal sequences are much more frequent than heterosyllabic or phonotactically illegal sequences.
