National audienceLone parent families are specifically exposed to poverty in Europe, where their development challenges social policies. The article first examines the reshaping of single parent families along time and across European countries; it points out their diversity as well as their varied exposure to poverty. Then it addresses to a shift at work in European inclusion strategies since the late 1990's, questioning both its principles and implications. Integration into employment is now increasingly seen as the best strategy to protect lone parent families against poverty compared to unconditional income support.
