International audienceThe threat of an epidemic such as HIV/AIDS can revive crises of identity. In this context, links need to be made between groups and behaviour patterns and ideologies where communities are being exposed to rapid socio-economic and cultural changes, as it is the case in China and Taiwan. Against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic, social perceptions of the illness are exacerbated by the presence of the 'Other', the 'stranger'. The term 'stranger' is used generically to include all those who are not ethnic Han Chinese, whether they are 'strangers' from other countries or 'strangers' who are Chinese nationals but not ethnic Han.
