The study of 32 German talk shows reveals that phraseological expressions are regularly subject to verbal or nonverbal activities, which rephrase, paraphrase fixed expressions, make puns with them and so forth. This article concentrates on one particular type of preceding or subsequent conversational treatment of fixed expressions, i.e. metalinguistic comments and evaluations. These are used to point out that lexical expressions are fixed and commonly used, to indicate the source of a quotation, and in particular to show producer-preferred interpretation.
