Les prélats de Gascogne au concile de Perpignan

International audienceThis paper begins by underlying the odd loyalty which ties the episcopate of Gascony to Benedict XIII. Over the first decade of the 15 th century, the Pope endeavoured to get seats for his fellows, with the help of princes. Despite the existence of various ecclesiological currents of thought, what mattered were the sole convictions of the prelates who exercised jurisdictionnal powers. During the council, Benedict XIII did not face any difficulty to have them recognize his legitimacy. But he had to face widespread criticism against his political inertia. If the prelates of Gascony did not attend the council in order to voice their opposition to him, they did leave him in the following months and rallied the Pisan obedience. The authority of Benedict was still recognized in Navarre, Bearn and Armagnac. John I of Bearn ordered his states to obey Benedict, while the princely leaders of Armagnac, Bernard VII, Bonne and John IV, accepted the obedience of Pisa without relinquishing their conviction about the legitimacy of Benedict. These positions had nothing in common and none of the two obediences managed to be the exclusive authority in Gascony in the years following the council of Perpignan.L'article commence par présenter la singulière fidélité de l'épiscopat de Gascogne à Benoît XIII. Le pape s'est employé dans la décennie 1400 à placer ses hommes, grâce au concours de princes bien disposés à son égard. Quels que soient les courants d'opinion qui animent le clergé de Gascogne, seul importe l'avis de ces prélats et princes qui détiennent un pouvoir de juridiction. Tout au long du concile, Benoît XIII n'a guère de difficulté à leur faire célébrer sa légitimité, encore qu'il fasse les frais de certaines critiques dirigées contre son immobilisme. Si les prélats de Gascogne ne se sont pas rendus au concile dans un esprit de rébellion, ils sont cependant nombreux à rompre avec Benoît XIII dans les mois qui suivent et à rallier l'obédience de Pise. L'autorité de Benoît XIII se perpétue cependant en Navarre, Béarn et Armagnac. Jean Ier de Béarn ordonne à ses Etats d'obéir à Benoît XIII, tandis que les princes d'Armagnac, Bernard VII, Bonne et Jean IV acceptent l'obédience de Pise sans renier leur conviction sur la légitimité de Benoît XIII. Tout oppose les prises de positions de Jean Ier et Bernard VII. Aucune des deux obédiences ne s'impose de façon exclusive en Gascogne dans l'immédiat après-concile
