This thesis aims at studying the temporal span of register and tempo variations and the functions they convey, in English and French. It tackles one of the major issues in the study of the sources of prosodic variability, that of their more or less long term delimitation, their interaction and their overlapping, hence the difficulty of their distinction. The author argues for an embedded structure of variations of register and tempo, hence the idea of multi-level and multi-domain variations.
