We address the problem of optimal selection of production control rules for a manufacturing facility shared between two classes of items : a small number of high demand rate items and a large number of items with low demand rates. Demands for the products are independent Poisson processes. The performance criterion includes inventory holding costs subject to a service level constraint. We investigate the issue of optimal selection of scheduling rules for the global production system : the classical FIFO rule or a preemptive priority (PR) rule, giving priority to the low volume products, each time coupled with the selection of the associate optimal production strategy (Make-To-Stock or Make-To-Order).
