International audienceThe present paper questions the nature of analogical reasoning and its heuristic power, then examines the nature of logical and historical relationships between analogical reasoning and the rise of radical novelty in physics. The analysis will be conducted on the example of Planck's introduction of the famous formula ε = hν in 1900 — today considered as a symbol of the birth of quantum mechanics and obtained by Planck in 1900 by taking one's cue from a demonstration of Boltzmann.
