Opus litterarum. L'inscription alphabétique et le rite de consécration de l'église (IXe-XIIe siècle)

ISSN : 0007-9731International audienceThe inclusion of two alphabets - Greek and Latin - on the floor of a church about to be consecrated is a tiny part of the medieval ritual of dedication, yet it was amply commented upon by exegetes and it drove an intense ecclesiological reflection between 9th and 13th century. Its origin not being Roman, the inscription of an alphabet was first attested in a gallican context - sometimes with Irish philological characteristics -, and also through late evidences of the old Ambrosian or Mozarabic tradition ; the various meanings it had seems to have been fixed durably by the Carolingian turn. This ephemeral rite, sometimes epigraphically captured in a building's stones, highlights the opus litterarum, the work of the letters, source of every writing and of the Word in its totality, via a particularly fascinating foundational and sacralizing process.Si l'inscription de deux alphabets, grec et latin, sur le sol d'une église à consacrer représente une infime partie du rituel médiéval de la dédicace, elle est abondamment commentée par les exégètes et soutient une intense réflexion ecclésiologique entre le IXe et le XIIIe siècle. D'origine non romaine, attestée pour la première fois en contexte romano-franc, avec parfois des traits philologiques irlandais, ainsi que dans des témoins tardifs de l'ancienne tradition ambrosienne ou mozarabe, l'inscription alphabétique revêt une multiplicité de sens que le tournant carolingien semble tout à la fois cristalliser et fixer. Ce rite éphémère, parfois matérialisé sous une forme épigraphique dans les pierres de l'édifice, met en lumière l'opus litterarum - l'oeuvre des lettres, source de toute écriture et de tout Verbe, dans un processus fondateur et sacralisant particulièrement fascinant
