ISSN : 0007-9731International audienceThe inclusion of two alphabets - Greek and Latin - on the floor of a church about to be consecrated is a tiny part of the medieval ritual of dedication, yet it was amply commented upon by exegetes and it drove an intense ecclesiological reflection between 9th and 13th century. Its origin not being Roman, the inscription of an alphabet was first attested in a gallican context - sometimes with Irish philological characteristics -, and also through late evidences of the old Ambrosian or Mozarabic tradition ; the various meanings it had seems to have been fixed durably by the Carolingian turn.
