The Western Sahara has always been a crossroads, be it geographically, culturally or climatically. Commercial caravans crossing the region generated cultural exchanges and the progressive introduction of Islam into the southernmost fringes of the Sahel. This volume contains essays analysing the prehistory of Mauritania, the social and religious history of Wadi Noun and the medieval Trans-Saharan trade. In addition, it looks at the establishment of the Algeria-Moroccan border, and the outlook for the unfinished decolonization process in Western Sahara.
