International audienceThe coastline of the kingdom of Murcia was during the Middle Ages a maritime boundary practically deserted and unsafe. Fishing was the main activity of these small coastal ports. It was not until the late fifteenth century to see these ports experience a real boom and the Kingdom of Murcia to be integrated in the circuits of the great European trade. Among them Cartagena, having languished for nearly two centuries, imposed itself undoubtedly as the most important of all the south coast of the Kingdom of Castile, the only commercial area which exceeded the regional framework and whose traffic was not confined to contribute to the supply of a nearby urban center, a necessary step on the route that connected northern Europe to Mediterranean.Le littoral de la côte du royaume de Murcie fut pendant tout le Moyen Âge une frontière maritime pratiquement déserte et peu sûre. La pêche était la principale activité des petits ports côtiers. Il faut attendre la fin du XVe siècle, pour voir ces ports connaître un véritable essor et être intégrés aux circuits du grand commerce européen. Parmi eux, Carthagène, après avoir végété durant près de deux siècles, s'imposa incontestablement comme le plus important de toute la côte sud du royaume de Castille, le seul dont l'aire commerciale dépassait le cadre régional et dont le trafic ne se limitait pas à contribuer au ravitaillement d'un centre urbain voisin, une étape obligée sur la route maritime qui unissait l'Europe du Nord à la Méditerranée
