Classer et décrire les adjectifs du français

International audienceWhich features are to be used to classify French adjectives? We propose about thirty syntactic-semantic features which, when applied to the French adjectives which play the role of the predicate of a copulative sentence, produce about forty classes. What is the point of a taxonomy of adjectives ? It meets two requirements. On the one hand, such work helps to organize our knowledge of lexical entries of adjectives, and reflects a possible attitude found in many natural and physical sciences. On the other hand, since the classification is based not only on semantic but also on formal or syntactic features, it helps to describe the lexical entries in a such a way that the results can be used in language processing. The article surveys several examples of features, and then presents the class of symmetrical adjectives.En fonction de quelles propriétés convient-il de classer les adjectifs du français ? Nous proposons une trentaine de propriétés syntaxico-sémantiques qui, d'après nos investigations, répartissent les adjectifs prédicatifs du français en une quarantaine de classes. Pourquoi une taxonomie des adjectifs ? Cela répond à deux exigences. D'une part, un tel travail contribue à organiser notre connaissance des entrées lexicales d'adjectifs, et reflète une attitude qu'on rencontre dans de nombreuses sciences expérimentales. D'autre part, dans la mesure où la classification se fonde sur des propriétés non seulement sémantiques mais encore formelles ou syntaxiques, elle contribue à décrire les entrées lexicales d'une façon utilisable dans le traitement automatique des langues. L'article passe en revue plusieurs exemples de propriétés, puis présente la classe des adjectifs symétriques
