This thesis in industrial organization is analyzing firms' strategies for the protection of their intellectual property. Welfare analysis of such strategies is provided, as well as details of their impact on market competition. The first two articles, following an empirical approach, study the protection of IP for French firms using the Community Innovation Survey 4. We disentangle two opposite effects involved in how firms chooses to protect their innovation with a patent or not. The analysis is conducted with a bivariate probit model and shows that, in the intermediate goods industry, small innovation have a higher probability of being patented, while secrecy is more likely to be used to protect a large innovation than a small one.
