Les sociétés juridiques dans l'Empire russe au tournant du XXe siècle : professionnalisation des juristes et culture juridique

International audienceThe first law societies were learned societies whose members were law specialists. They were founded throughout the Russian Empire in the wake of the so-called great reforms of the 1860s. The end of the nineteenth century saw a second wave of society founding, both in and outside universities - the latter in smaller towns. At a time when professions in general gained visibility and coherence, these law societies tried to unify the Empire's lawyers. The keen interest for this kind of organization has been attributed to the political and intellectual context of the turn of the century, when a constitutional movement seeking to advance the legal protection of civil rights developed thanks to the decisive participation of many law professionals. However, the comparison between the larger law societies and the smaller, the study of their means of influence - journals and other publications -, the examination of their internal activities and public relations, show their contribution to the professionalization of lawyers to be less significant than has been thought. This study also shows that these law societies should not be considered as uniformly adhering to the liberal legal culture that opposed the official one.Les premières sociétés juridiques, sociétés savantes rassemblant les spécialistes du droit dans l'Empire russe, furent un héritage de la période des grandes réformes des années 1860. À la fin du XIXe siècle commença une seconde vague de fondations, qui concerna à la fois des sociétés juridiques universitaires, et des sociétés non universitaires, dans des villes de moindre importance. Au moment où les professions gagnaient en visibilité et en cohérence, les sociétés juridiques s'efforçaient d'œuvrer à unifier les juristes de l'empire. De plus, l'engouement pour ce mode d'organisation a pu être rapporté au contexte politique et intellectuel du tournant du XXe siècle, avec l'essor d'un mouvement constitutionnaliste attaché à la promotion d'un droit protecteur des libertés individuelles et dans lequel les juristes jouèrent un rôle important. Cependant, la comparaison entre la situation des sociétés juridiques les plus importantes et les autres, l'étude de leurs instruments d'influence, revues et autres publications, l'examen de leurs activités internes et de leurs relations extérieures conduisent à réviser à la baisse leur contribution au projet de professionnalisation des juristes. Ils permettent aussi de nuancer la vision de sociétés uniformément acquises à la culture juridique libérale et à la critique de la culture juridique officielle
