International audienceThe first law societies were learned societies whose members were law specialists. They were founded throughout the Russian Empire in the wake of the so-called great reforms of the 1860s. The end of the nineteenth century saw a second wave of society founding, both in and outside universities - the latter in smaller towns. At a time when professions in general gained visibility and coherence, these law societies tried to unify the Empire's lawyers. The keen interest for this kind of organization has been attributed to the political and intellectual context of the turn of the century, when a constitutional movement seeking to advance the legal protection of civil rights developed thanks to the decisive participation of ...
