The middle-sized town of Villingen-Schwenningen results from the merge of two historic cities on both sides of the former border that separated Baden from Wurtemberg in South Western Germany. This specific urban project, mostly regarded as an exemplary success in the 1970's reveals how the regional planning used in Germany was strongly based on the theory of central places.
