This article analyses the relationships between the Russian state, the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church along three lines. First, it shows how traditional Russian theological and cultural representations of Catholicism as the "Other" re-emerged in times of crisis, such as the nineteenth-century Polish insurrections. Second, it examines the autocracy's use of religious authority, including Catholicism, to bolster the imperial order.
