La légitimation du rock en URSS dans les années 1970-1980 : Acteurs, logiques, institutions

The paper analyzes the evolution of Soviet/Russian rock music, from a West-inspired English-speaking "subculture" confined to dance clubs in the 1960's and 1970's to russkii rok, the canon it has become today -- a quasi-synonym of sung poetry --, thanks to its progressive legitimization in the 1980's. This legitimization process started in the late 1970's, parallel to the empowerment of a new artistic generation (Leningrad's "New Wave") that broke away from the close imitation of Western rock stars. It was made possible by the affiliation of rock to a certain Russian cultural tradition (early twentieth-century poetry, bard songs, the "new urban folklore"). Numerous and diverse actors and institutions (literary and artistic intelligentsia, censorship focusing on rock bands' lyrics, Leningrad's Rock Club, underground rock activists in search of recognition, an audience in search of meaning...), contributed, without obeying the same logic, to turning rock into a national and almost literary genre. In this quality, between 1986 and 1988, russkii rok donned the role of an avant-garde democratic denunciator of the Soviet regime. Then, after the collapse of the USSR, it rapidly lost its negative identity without nonetheless losing its literary identification.L'article analyse le chemin parcouru par le rock en URSS puis en Russie, de l'état d'une (sous)culture occidentalisée anglophone, ayant trouvé refuge dans les discothèques des années 1960-1970, jusqu'au canon du russkij rok actuel, devenu presque synonyme de poésie chantée, via sa légitimation progressive dans les années 1980. Celle-ci a été amorcée à la fin des années 1970 avec l'arrivée en force d'une nouvelle génération artistique au sein de l'underground rock (" nouvelle vague " de Leningrad), en rupture avec les anciens standards du mimétisme anglophone. Elle a également été rendue possible par l'affiliation du rock à une tradition culturelle russe, à la fois lettrée et populaire (poésie du début du xxe siècle, chanson de bardes, figure du nouveau folklore urbain). Nombre d'acteurs et d'institutions hétérogènes (intelligentsia littéraire et artistique, institution de censure attentive aux textes des groupes rock, le Rock-club de Leningrad, activistes rock underground en quête de reconnaissance, publics en quête de sens...), sans être orchestrés par une seule logique, ont contribué à la constitution du rock en un genre national (quasi) littéraire. C'est sous cette forme que, dans la dénonciation démocratique du régime soviétique, le rock a endossé le rôle d'avant-garde avant de devenir rapidement obsolescent, pâtissant de cette identité négative après la chute de l'URSS, sans pour autant se défaire de son identification littéraire
