Phrases sans parole : à propos d'une histoire d'amour du XXe siècle

International audienceThe article deals with the relationships between narrative (more precisely, narration) and fiction in a short story by Mario Benedetti entitled "Cinq ans de vie" ("Cinco años de vida", 1976, trans. Anne Castermann). Its theoretical frame of reference is the non-communicational or poetic theory of narration developed by S.-Y. Kuroda and Ann Banfield. In the first section, I put forward a brief version of their theory in order to determine if it can be applied to Benedetti's story (in the author's own words, a fantastic tale [cuento fantástico], containing an "unnatural storyworld" to use contemporary terminology). Their theory can be summarized by the following statements: 1) Communicational theories of narrative, based on the concepts of narrator and narratee, whether real or fictional, can only account for a sub-category of fictional narratives; 2) There are fictional narratives with a narrator (understood to be fictional) and fictional narratives with no narrator; 3) Explanation using the omniscient narrator is, in most cases, an ad hoc explanation; 4) A clear distinction should be made between elements pertaining to the content of the fictional representation and those pertaining to the means put to use to help construct this representation; 5) Third-person narrative fiction can be considered as a structured collection of information, the origin of some of which cannot be assigned within the fictional world, while the rest stems from one or more subjects of consciousness belonging to the fictional world; 6) Reading a third-person fictional narrative implies recognizing the author's intentions relative to the objective or subjective character of sentences or contexts. The second section offers a reading of the ending of "Five Years of Life" according to the protocol defined by Kuroda and Banfield. After showing that their theory can lay claim to descriptive adequation in the case of Benedetti's story, I try to see whether, relative to simple intuitive competence, it also makes it possible to form richer interpretative propositions.Cet article porte sur les relations entre récit (plus précisément narration) et fiction dans une nouvelle de Mario Benedetti, "Cinq ans de vie" ("Cinco años de vida", 1967, trad. Anne Castermann). Son cadre de référence théorique est la théorie non communicationnelle ou théorie poétique de la narration de S.-Y. Kuroda et Ann Banfield. Dans la première partie, je propose sous une forme succincte une version de cette théorie, pour déterminer ensuite si elle est applicable à la nouvelle de Benedetti ("nouvelle fantastique" [cuento fantástico] selon l'expression de l'auteur, contenant un "monde non naturel" dans la terminologie contemporaine). Cette théorie peut se résumer dans les propositions suivantes : 1) Les théories communicationnelles du récit, basées sur les concepts de narrateur et de narrataire, réels ou fictionnels, ne peuvent rendre compte que d'une sous-catégorie de récits de fiction ; 2) Il existe des récits de fiction avec narrateur (sous-entendu fictionnel) et des récits de fiction sans narrateur ; 3) L'explication par le narrateur omniscient est, dans la plupart des cas, une explication ad hoc ; 4) Il convient de distinguer clairement ce qui relève du contenu de la représentation fictionnelle et ce qui relève des moyens mobilisés au service de la construction de cette représentation ; 5) Le récit de fiction à la troisième personne moderne peut être considéré comme une collection structurée d'informations, les unes sans origine assignable dans le monde de la fiction, les autres provenant d'un ou de plusieurs sujets de conscience appartenant au monde de la fiction ; 6) La lecture d'un récit de fiction à la troisième personne implique que l'on reconnaisse les intentions de l'auteur relativement au caractère objectif ou subjectif des phrases ou des contextes. La deuxième partie contient une approche du dénouement de " Five Years of Life " selon le protocole défini par Kuroda et Banfield. Après avoir montré que la théorie pouvait prétendre à l'adéquation descriptive dans le cas de la nouvelle de Benedetti, j'essaie de voir si elle permet aussi de construire des propositions interprétatives plus riches que la simple compétence intuitive
