International audienceThe article deals with the relationships between narrative (more precisely, narration) and fiction in a short story by Mario Benedetti entitled "Cinq ans de vie" ("Cinco años de vida", 1976, trans. Anne Castermann). Its theoretical frame of reference is the non-communicational or poetic theory of narration developed by S.-Y. Kuroda and Ann Banfield. In the first section, I put forward a brief version of their theory in order to determine if it can be applied to Benedetti's story (in the author's own words, a fantastic tale [cuento fantástico], containing an "unnatural storyworld" to use contemporary terminology).
