Le narrateur et l'interprétation des termes déictiques dans le récit de fiction

International audienceThis article is the expanded version of a talk given at the international symposium "Deixis: de l'énoncé à l'énonciation et vice-versa / From utterance to uttering and vice-versa. Multidisciplinary views on deixis", organized by the Center for French Studies at University of Tartu. It departs from the observation that the narrator is the object of a debate that is as yet unresolved in narrative theory and more particularly in the theory of fictional narrative. It is a matter of finding out if there is a narrator for all narratives or only for some of them (and therefore if narratives can be told "without narrators"). Within the narrator question, lies yet another question, which is implicitly or explicitly raised: that of the enunciative status of fictional narrative. The introduction evokes two opposing theoretic options. The first sees the narrator as the fictive speaking subject of the narration: "who speaks (in the narrative) is not who writes (in life)", as Roland Barthes put it. This is the position of structural analysis of narrative, the "classical" narratology of Gérard Genette and Tzvetan Todorov and, more recently, of enunciative narratology. As all speaking subjects, the narrator can only be in the narrative in the "first person" (the real question being whether or not he has the chance to say "I" to designate the main character or one of the characters of his story.) The "third person" narrative does not exist theoretically in narratology. The second option, as it turns out, cannot be reconciled with the first. According to this option, nobody speaks, at the level of fictive utterance, in the third person narrative: there is no narrator. This assertion is a consequence of an overall refusal to consider narrative fiction as an act of utterance. Käte Hamburger denounces the "ignorance around epic narrative concerning its fundamental difference with utterance". This position is shared with Ann Banfield and by the representatives of "deictic shift theory" (School of Buffalo). After having gone over the source and principal developments of the thesis of the absence of the narrator in fictional narrative, and the corollary idea that the language of fictional narrative is not organized in a deictic manner like communicative language, the article successively presents Ann Banfield's syntactic arguments concerning free indirect speech and the pragmatic arguments of narratology in the large sense (argument of "fictive familiarity" and the argument of anticipation, which mostly reveal that for Genette and for other proponents of narratology, the exclusion of the author is a prerequisite for any narrative theory). It remarks that, when they are short of arguments, the proponents of narratology call on the reality of the act of reading : "In the most sober of narratives, someone talks to me, tells me a story, invites me to hear it as he's telling it [...]" (Genette). But is this really the reader's experience, if we understand that fictional narrative is meant to be read ? The end of the article is devoted to the contribution of cognitive science to the understanding of the processes at work in the reading of fictional narrative, with the "deictic shift theory" (or the theory of the shift of the reader's deictic center, and the space-time in which he finds himself near a point situated in the time-space of the narrative's character.)Cet article constitue le texte augmenté d'une communication au colloque international "Deixis : de l'énoncé à l'énonciation et vice-versa", organisé par le Centre d'études francophones de l'Université de Tartu. Il part du constat que le narrateur fait l'objet d'un débat non encore tranché dans la théorie narrative et plus particulièrement dans la théorie du récit de fiction. Il s'agit de savoir s'il y a un narrateur pour tous les récits ou seulement pour certains d'entre eux (et donc si des récits peuvent être dits "sans narrateur"). À travers la question du narrateur, c'est toute la question du statut énonciatif des récits de fiction qui se trouve implicitement ou explicitement posée. L'introduction évoque les deux options théoriques en présence. La première voit dans le narrateur le sujet d'énonciation fictif du récit : "qui parle (dans le récit) n'est pas qui écrit (dans la vie)", selon une formule de Roland Barthes. C'est la position de l'analyse structurale du récit, de la narratologie "classique" de Gérard Genette et Tzvetan Todorov et, plus récemment, de la narratologie énonciative. Comme tout sujet d'énonciation, le narrateur ne peut être dans son récit qu'"à la première personne" (la vraie question étant de savoir s'il a ou non l'occasion d'employer "je" pour désigner le personnage principal ou l'un des personnages de son récit). Le récit "à la troisième personne" n'a pas d'existence théorique dans la narratologie. La deuxième option s'avère inconciliable avec la précédente. Dans cette option, personne ne parle, au niveau de l'énoncé fictif, dans le récit à la troisième personne : il n'y a pas de narrateur. Cette affirmation est une conséquence du refus global de considérer la fiction narrative comme un acte d'énonciation. Käte Hamburger dénonce la "méconnaissance de la narration épique dans sa différence fondamentale avec l'énonciation". Cette position est partagée par Ann Banfield et par les représentants de la "théorie du déplacement déictique" (École de Buffalo). Après avoir rappelé l'origine et les principaux développements de la thèse de l'absence de narrateur dans le récit de fiction et de l'idée corollaire que le langage de la fiction narrative n'est pas déictiquement organisé comme le langage de la communication, l'article présente successivement les arguments syntaxiques d'Ann Banfield, concernant le style indirect libre, et les arguments pragmatiques, au sens large, de la narratologie (argument de la "familiarité fictive" et argument des anticipations, qui révèlent surtout que, pour Genette et pour les autres représentants de la narratologie, l'exclusion de l'auteur est un préalable nécessaire à toute théorie du récit). Il constate que, quand ils sont à court d'arguments théoriques, les représentants de la narratologie font appel à la réalité de l'acte de lecture : "Dans le récit le plus sobre, quelqu'un me parle, me raconte une histoire, m'invite à l'entendre comme il la raconte...", écrit Genette. Mais est-ce bien cela la réalité de la lecture, si l'on entend par là la lecture du récit de fiction tel qu'il est fait pour être lu ? La fin de l'article est consacrée à la contribution des sciences cognitives à la compréhension des processus à l'œuvre dans la lecture du récit de fiction, avec la "théorie du déplacement déictique" (ou théorie du déplacement du centre déictique du lecteur de l'espace-temps dans lequel il se trouve vers un point situé dans l'espace-temps des personnages du récit)
