International audienceThis article is the expanded version of a talk given at the international symposium "Deixis: de l'énoncé à l'énonciation et vice-versa / From utterance to uttering and vice-versa. Multidisciplinary views on deixis", organized by the Center for French Studies at University of Tartu. It departs from the observation that the narrator is the object of a debate that is as yet unresolved in narrative theory and more particularly in the theory of fictional narrative. It is a matter of finding out if there is a narrator for all narratives or only for some of them (and therefore if narratives can be told "without narrators").
