International audienceAstrology in India serves both religious and therapeutic aims. This Brahmanical knowledge plays an important role in bringing together ritual and devotional practices on the one hand, and etiological and medical ideas on the other hand. In astrological counselling in Banaras, the interpenetration of religious and therapeutic elements is particularly evident in the discourses and practices about planets (graha) and their influence. This paper examines contemporary ideas about planetary influence through first analysing the way grahas, the "seizers", are described in ancient textual sources.
