Les oracula Leonis

International audienceSeveral Byzantine historians suggest the existence in the Imperial Library of Constantinople, of secret books , sometimes called "sibylline", containing oracles, with images, about the future emperors and the destiny of Constantinople, sometimes up the end of the world. Byzantine sources also provide us with many oracles or prophecies, isolated or grouped. Many of these groups of oracles are attributed to Emperor Leo VI the Wise (886-912), which earned them the name Oracula Leonis. Some manuscripts for these oracles with their illustrations (often fantastic beasts) have survived. I try first to identify, date and present groups of oracles attributed to Leo, and the various interpretations they have received along the times (each time identifying the prophesied emperor according to its political agenda) . Then I focus my attention on two particularly important classes of oracles from the fourteenth century: those who evoke the poor Emperor and those who evoke the end of Constantinople. Finally, I examine the fate of Oracula Leonis in two cultural areas: Byzantium at the time of the taking of the city by the Turks, and in the following centuries (the oracles no longer then understood as announcing the latest Greek emperors and fall of the empire, but the last Ottoman sultans and the liberation of the empire), and in the West where, quickly translated into Latin, they unleashed two historical-eschatological myths: that of the angelic Pope (through Vaticinia de summis pontificibus attributed to Joachim of Fiore) and that of the petrified Emperor .Plusieurs historiens byzantins évoquent l'existence, dans la Bibliothèque impériale de Constantinople, d'ouvrages secrets, parfois nommés "sibyllins", contenant des oracles, accompagnés d'images, portant sur les empereurs futurs et les destinées de Constantinople, parfois jusqu'à la fin du monde. Les sources byzantines nous fournissent aussi de nombreux oracles ou prophéties, isolés ou regroupés. Plusieurs de ces groupes d'oracles sont attribués à l'empereur Léon VI le Sage (886-912), ce qui leur vaut le nom d'Oracula Leonis. Certains manuscrits portant ces oracles accompagnés de leurs illustrations (souvent des bêtes fantastiques) sont parvenus jusqu'à nous. Je tâche premièrement de recenser, de dater et de présenter les groupes d'oracles attribués à Léon, ainsi que les interprétations diverses qu'ils ont reçues au cours de l'histoire (chaque époque identifiant les empereur prophétisés en fonction de ses préoccupations politiques). Puis je focalise mon attention sur deux catégories d'oracles particulièrement importants à partir du XIVe siècle: ceux qui évoquent l'Empereur pauvre et libérateur et ceux qui évoquent la fin de Constantinople. Enfin, j'examine la destinée des Oracula Leonis dans deux aires culturelles: à Byzance au moment de la prise de la Ville par les Turcs et dans les siècles suivants (les oracles n'étant plus compris alors comme annonçant les derniers empereurs grecs et la chute de l'empire, mais les derniers sultans ottomans et la libération de l'empire), et en Occident où, rapidement traduits en latins, ils ont nourri deux mythes historico-eschatologiques: celui du pape angélique (par le biais des Vaticinia de summis pontificibus attribués à Joachim de Flore) et celui de l'empereur pétrifié
