This thesis aims to compare three Romance languages (French, Spanish and Italian) with respect to the phenomenon of diathesis. The goal is, on the one hand, to separate the properties of diathesis into the various linguistic levels of analysis (pragmatics, semantics, syntax) which the passive, impersonal, reflexive and causative constructions share; and on the other, to examine what is language-specific in the functioning of these languages and to reveal their possibilities and limits in terms of these phenomena.
