International audienceFrom camp to village: sedentarisation and transformations of the Kazakh aul during the Soviet period. The word aul meant a nomadisation unit (basic social of Kazakh pastoralism) or the smaller administrative region in the Kazakh steppes in the Russian Empire then in Soviet Kazakhstan until 1932. After the experience of collectivisation and sedentarisation, aul became a Kazakh permanent place of settlement, located in pastoral regions. This paper examines patterns of this radical transformation, using various arguments.
