International audienceThe increasing number of gated communities in the country left a deep impression on the Brazilian minds. Yet, even before walls and other physical barriers became widespread, a lot of dwelling communities had been developed across urban landscapes. Since the end of the 19th century, a part of the Paulistano and Carioca elites had settled in new and exclusively residential neighbourhoods. Progressively these spaces were made more complex with, for example, the introduction of urban services, leisure facilities and managing bodies.
