International audienceDespite recent research, little is known about libraries in mendicant convents. Rather than focusing on the contents of these libraries, we have tried to study how the placing of books in space as well as their intellectual classifying help to better understand the world and to structure it along a rational line. The catalogues that were established by clerics in the 17th and 18th centuries are a priceless means to figure out the order and disorder prevailing in these places. The 53 documents gathered throughout France highlight how difficult it was for the clerics to conceive a filing process that was rigourous enough since they weren't familiar with the nascent library-economy.
