Il caso della Princesse des Ursins a Roma (1675-1701) : Tra separatezza e integrazione culturale

International audienceWhen Marie-Anne de La Trémoille married prince Flavio Orsini, known for his Francophile sympathies, at Rome in 1675, she had already experienced exile, both in Spain and in Italy. In addition to French, she spoke Spanish and Italian fluently, and she benefitted from many protectors in Paris, Madrid, and Rome, upon whom she intended to call to consolidate her own position. She took advantage of the precedent set a few years previous in the Urbs by Maris Mancini, who had provided grist for the mills of Roman chronicles by showing off a " French way of life ", in strong contrast with the customs of the city. Marie-Anne de La Trémoille, who had inherited from her mother the tradition of Madame de Rambouillet, of the Hôtel d'Albret and of that of Richelieu, introduced into her apartment in the Pasquino Palace - an Orsini stronghold situated on the south side of the piazza Navona - the art of French-style conversation. From the correspondence which the lady produced during her frequent trips between Paris and Rome, which continued after her wedding, there constantly emerges a comparison between the two cities, both in the field of fashion and in that of the practices of social life and of music. Should one seek to emphasize the cultural transfers taking place between the two cities by means of the analysis of the noblewoman's tastes, it becomes clear that if, on the one hand, Marie-Anne tried to distinguish herself from the Roman ladies, for instance through her dress or behavior, on the other she chose Italian music without hesitation, employing Roman musicians and choosing Roman and Venetian works for her private concerts. This essay originates from the consultation of two archival collections : the Orsini Collection of the Capitoline Historical Archive, and the Lanta della Rovere Collection of the State Archive at Rome, which preserves the epistolary corpus produced by the lady during the period preceding her departure for Spain, and especially the letters written by Marie-Anne de La Trémoille to her husband until the latter's death in 1698, and those addressed to her younger sister Louise-Angélique de la Trémoille, who married Antonio Lante della Rovere in 1683. Only a part of the lady's letters, preserved in the Orsini Collection, has been published, and only some fifteen of those from the Lante Collection. All the rest is previously unpublished.Quando nel 1675 Marie-Anne de La Trémoille sposò a Roma il principe Flavio Orsini, noto per le sue simpatie filofrancesi, aveva già sperimentato l'esilo sia in Spagna che in Italia. Oltre al francese, parlava correntemente lo spagnolo e l'italiano. Godeva di numerose protezioni a Parigi, a Madrid e a Roma su cui intendeva far leva per consolidare la propria posizione. Sfruttò il varco aperto nell'Urbe alcuni anni prima da Maria Mancini che aveva alimentato le cronache romane ostentando un "vivere alla francese" in forte contrasto con i costumi della città. Marie-Anne de La Trémoille, che aveva ereditato dalla madre la tradizione di Madame de Rambouillet, dell'Hôtel d'Albret e di quello di Richelieu, introdusse nel suo appartamento di palazzo Pasquino - feudo Orsini posto nel lato meridionale di piazza Navona - l'arte della conversazione alla francese. Dalla corrispondenza che la donna produsse durante i suoi frequenti viaggi tra Parigi e Roma, che non si interruppero dopo nozze, affiora costantemente il paragone tra le due città sia nel campo della moda, che in quello delle pratiche della vita sociale e della musica. Volendo mettere in luce i transfer culturali in atto tra le due città grazie all'analisi dei gusti della nobildonna, emerge con evidenza che, se da un lato Marie-Anne cercava di distinguersi dalle donne romane attraverso ad esempio il vestiario o il comportamento, dall'altro sceglieva senza riserve la musica italiana, impiegando musicisti romani e scegliendo opere romane e veneziane per i concerti privati. Questo saggio trae origine dalla consultazione di due fondi d'archivio, il fondo Orsini dell'Archivio Storico Capitolino e il fondo Lante della Rovere dell'Archivio di Stato di Roma, al cui interno è conservato il corpus epistolare prodotto dalla donna durante il periodo precedente alla sua partenza per la Spagna, in particolare le lettere scritte da Marie-Anne de La Trémoille al marito fino alla morte di quest'ultimo avvenuta nel 1698, e quelle indirizzate alla sorella minore, Louise-Angélique de la Trémoille, che nel 1683 sposò Antonio Lante della Rovere. Solo una parte delle lettere della donna, conservate nel fondo Orsini, è stata pubblicata, solo una quindicina di quelle del fondo Lante lo è stata: tutto il resto è inedito
