International audienceClientelism is generally considered, in a historical and sociological perspective, to be an obstacle to political modernization, and democratisation. As an individualised relationship based on mutual benefits and satisfaction of material purposes (political support in return for services), it is assumed to prevent the fulfilment of democratic citizenship and modern political exchange, based on collective identifications, political values, and ideology. The study of the implementation and anchorage of representative democracy in Corsica during the French Third Republic (1870-1940) leads to revisit such a conception of clientelism.
