Social representations of the good car driver: implications for health and safety

Stereotypes between men and women drivers and their implications have been a major societal issue for several years (Granié & Papafava, 2011). However, so far, no studies have demonstrated the precise content of the social representation of a good car driver. This study is based on the structural approach of social representations (Abric, 1994). The aim is to examine this social representation according to sex, age and social status, and consider its structural pattern. 160 French people were asked to answer a questionnaire, using verbal association. Participants were equitably distributed on the basis of sex, age class (from 16 to 50 years-old and over) and social status. A second questionnaire was conducted on the basis of the results obtained in this preliminary phase. 200 French people were asked to evaluate what extent items (identified by the thematic analysis conducted on the associations produced) correspond to the image they have of a good car driver, using a 10 point Likert scale. Furthermore, they responded to a TIC (Lo Monaco et al. 2008) used to determine the central core of the social representation. The results seem to reflect the effect of social positions on the choice made to designate a good car driver. The selection of certain characteristics based on these positions shows the social construction of these attitudes. The results are discussed through in-group/out-group relations, age and socialization impacts in attitudes associated with car driving.Les stéréotypes à l'égard des hommes et des femmes au volant et leurs implications sont une préoccupation sociale depuis quelques années. Cependant, pour l'instant aucune étude n'a démontré précisément le contenu de la représentation sociale du bon conducteur. Cette étude est basée sur l'approche structurale des représentations sociales. L'objectif est d'examiner la représentation sociale du bon conducteur en fonction du sexe, de l'âge et du statut social de l'individu et d'observer la structure de la représentation. 160 individus ont renseigné un questionnaire utilisant la procédure de l'association verbale. Les participants été également répartir sur la base du sexe, de la classe d'âge et du statut social. Un second questionnaire a été distribué en fonction des résultats de cette première phase. 200 participants ont dû évaluer à quel point des caractéristiques (identifiés par l'analyse thématique des associations produites) correpondaient à l'image qu'ils se font du bon conducteur, en utilisant une échelle en 10 points. De plus, ils devaient répondre à un TIC utilisé pour déterminer les éléments centraux de la représentation sociale. Les résultats montrent l'effet des positions sociales des individus sur les choix produits pour désigner un bon conducteur. La sélection de certaines caractéristiques, basées sur ces positions sociales, montre la construction sociale de la représentation. Les résultats sont discutés au travers des relations in-group/out-group, de l'âge et de l'impact de la socialisation sur les attitudes associées à la conduite d'un véhicule
