Impact de l'urbanisation sur l'intensification des systèmes de production horticoles au Cameroun

International audienceImpact of urbanization on the intensification of horticulture production systems in Cameroon. The urbanization of sub-Saharan African cities has resulted in an increase in food demand for horticultural productions (market gardening, plantains, yams...) and a modification of access conditions to productive resources (land, job, capital, inputs...). The extensive slash and burn production systems, which characterize food crop farming, are reaching the limit of their capacity to produce enough surplus without degrading the environment. This paper examines the impact of urban demand on the process of intensification of farming in the tropical forest zone. The stated hypothesis is that urbanization structures the process in a differential manner according to production around three orientations: specialization of intensive market garden production basins within the vicinity of towns; horticultural diversification of cash crops farming through intensification of work and mixed farming systems; and emergence of capital intensive enterprise farming, mobilising paid labour. Theoretically, a meeting point between an approach of systemic analysis and that of the sector is mobilized. The methodology mobilises field research conducted in Cameroon. It is organized in three stages: locating the zones supplying urban markets which localize zones supplying markets; surveys conducted by student interns (16 specific case studies); a synthesis using an analytical grid to evaluate the process of transformation of the production systems that the hypothesis can be tested.L'urbanisation des villes africaines sub-sahariennes se traduit par un accroissement des demandes alimentaires sur les productions horticoles (maraîchage, plantains, ignames...) et une modification des conditions d'accès aux ressources productives (terre, travail, capital, intrants...). Les systèmes de production d'abattis sur brûlis extensifs qui caractérisent les agricultures vivrières atteignent leurs limites dans leur capacité à dégager un surplus suffisant sans dégradation de l'environnement. Cette communication s'interroge sur l'impact de la demande urbaine sur le processus d'intensification de l'agriculture dans la zone forestière tropicale. Elle pose pour hypothèse que l'urbanisation structure ce processus de manière différenciée selon les productions autour de trois orientations : la spécialisation de bassins de productions maraîchers intensifs à proximité des villes. La diversification horticole des exploitations de cultures d'exportation par une intensification en travail et des systèmes de culture associés. L'émergence d'une agriculture d'entreprise intensive en capital, mobilisant le recours à une main-d'oeuvre salariée. D'un point de vue théorique il est mobilisé un croisement entre une approche d'analyse systémique et de filière. Le cadrage méthodologique mobilise une recherche de terrain conduite au Cameroun. Il s'organise en trois étapes. Un repérage des zones l'approvisionnement des marchés urbains qui localise les zones d'approvisionnement des marchés. Un dispositif d'enquêtes conduit par l'encadrement de stages d'étudiants (16 études de cas spécifiques). Une synthèse mobilisant une grille d'analyse des processus de transformation des systèmes de production permettant de tester l'hypothèse posée.
