Les pharmaciens français et les sciences de la vie dans les grandes institutions parisiennes, de la seconde moitié du XIXème siècle à la première guerre mondiale

International audienceFor the period under study, a number of french pharmacists holding positions in prestigious scientific institutions of Paris - the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, the École supérieure de Pharmacie, the Collège de France, the faculty of sciences - won renown in the field of the Life Sciences. Indeed, pharmaceutical training always accorded importance to the study of Natural History of which two branches are considered here : Zoology and Botany. In the field of the biology of animal organisms, the " institutional " pharmacists took an interest in both invertebrates and vertebrates. Alphonse Milne-Edwards was a rounded zoologist of great renown, with several competences, who studied Crustacea, Mammals and Birds, other pharmacists chose to more specialize. One such was Henri Beauregard, who meticulously described the anatomy of the Cetacea. In the field of Botany, the same phenomenon occured : the research work of Adolphe Chatin included both Mycets and Flowering Plants whilst the work of Paul Harriot and Narcisse Patouillard was only devoted to Cryptogamy. Léon Guignard was for his part a prominent scientist, who clarified many areas relating to cell division, the reproduction of Angiosperms and Phytochemistry. In Vegetal Physiology, Marcellin Berthelot and Georges Ville emerged as the winners of the debate over the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by plants. To conclude the work of the " institutional " pharmacists found applications in fields as diverse as Agronomy, Pharmacognosy or Toxicology.Durant la période considérée, de nombreux pharmaciens français en postes dans de grandes institutions scientifiques parisiennes - le Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, l'École supérieure de Pharmacie, le Collège de France, la faculté des sciences - s'illustrèrent dans le domaine des sciences de la vie. En effet, les études pharmaceutiques accordèrent toujours une large place à l'histoire naturelle, dont deux branches sont envisagées ici : la zoologie et la botanique. Dans le domaine de la biologie des organismes animaux, les pharmaciens " institutionnels " s'intéressèrent à la fois aux Invertébrés et aux Vertébrés. Alphonse Milne-Edwards fut un zoologiste complet de grande renommée, qui travailla à la fois sur les Crustacés, les Mammifères et les Oiseaux, tandis que d'autres pharmaciens choisirent de se spécialiser davantage, comme Henri Beauregard qui décrivit minutieusement l'anatomie des Cétacés. En botanique, si le champ de recherche d'Adolphe Chatin inclut aussi bien des Champignons que les plantes à fleurs, a contrario Paul Harriot et Narcisse Patouillard se consacrèrent uniquement à la Cryptogamie. Léon Guignard fut quant à lui un savant de premier plan, qui éclaircit de nombreuses questions relatives aux divisions cellulaires, à la reproduction des Angiospermes et à la phytochimie. En physiologie végétale, Marcellin Berthelot et Georges Ville sortirent vainqueurs du débat sur la fixation de l'azote atmosphérique par les plantes. Enfin, les travaux des pharmaciens " institutionnels " trouvèrent des applications dans divers domaines, comme l'agronomie, la pharmacognosie ou la toxicologie
