Histoire d'un phénomène linguistique : la défense de l'anglais australien, 1788-2000

These attitudes provoke a linguistic complex of inferiority towards Great Britain. This complex is the mainspring of the phenomenon of the defence of Australian English. During the Bulletin era, as the detractors of Australian English acquire a pseudo-scientific credibility, a resolution to defend the language emerges. There are three stages of evolution in the defence : claim, recognition and justification. The champions of Australian English have been working on the acceptance of an Australian linguistic change. They favour an endocentric view on Australian English rather than a eurocentric comparative judgment. In the prescientific era, S. J. Baker found support in America, with H. L. Mencken. During the scientific era, the Australian linguists proved that Australian English is appropriate to its environment, providing a scientific and institutional justification.Dès 1788, les définitions de l'anglais en Australie sont négatives : le vocabulaire est argotique et vulgaire, la prononciation nasale et négligée. Ce complexe sera le moteur du phénomène de défense de l'anglais australien. Une volonté d'affirmation linguistique se développe à la grande époque du Bulletin, en même temps que les détracteurs de la langue acquièrent une crédibilité pseudo-scientifique. Nous définissons trois phases du phénomène de défense : revendication, reconnaissance, justification. Les défenseurs de l'anglais australien travaillent à l'acceptation du changement linguistique austral, privilégiant une conception endocentrique au jugement comparatiste eurocentrique. A l'ère préscientifique de la défense, S. J. Baker prend appui sur l'expérience américaine et H. L. Mencken. A l'ère scientifique, les linguistes démontrent l'adéquation de l'anglais australien à son environnement, et justifient la distinction australienne scientifiquement puis institutionnellement
