Few men have been as much adulated and admired as General Lafayette, whose glory rests on his earlier years, when he was the “hero” of the American Revolutionary War. On both sides of the Atlantic, throughout his whole life, he was very popular and famous, which led him to be the emblem of the liberal and revolutionary struggle. However, in France, during the last decade of his life, he was far from being unanimously appreciated and his image suffered from virulent criticism. On the opposite, in the United States his image remained intact until his death and still today.
