La vision d’un corps coupé en deux. Lecture d’un conte de Maupassant, ''La Mère Sauvage''

International audiencen this article, Maupassant’s short story is examined as a complex ensemble of material and meaningful forms, which generate, during the reader-receiver activity,representations and interpretations. My goal is to reconstruct some of the operationstaking place, which belong in fact to the worlds of representations – according to thedistinction that is made between the figurative and the figural - and enunciation, andmore precisely to the enunciative scenography. Following a short presentation of theshort story, of its various editions, and what relates it to Maupassant’s other works, namely another story based on a dream, which is very close to Old Lady Sauvage, I mark out the leveling, the enunciative follow-ups and elements that allow the spatiotemporal intervals to appear in the story. This is based on a quasi-hallucinatory vision, which seems to be a major figure of meaning in the story : a body cut into halves. The figurative representations in the story, in contrast or analogy, proposes a picture of the world which resembles a fantasized body of the landscape and the places introduced in the story but also of the characters’ bodies and facial appearances. Interpreting the body imaginary of the text is complemented by an emphasis on the network of formal figures which constitutes the text and is arranged into semantic polarities. The question that this approach asks, which is based on interpretative semiology, is on the one hand that of nature and the function of what appears to be a fiction of a trauma – war in fact – and on the other hand, that of a screen which is modeled by the story, i.e. a projection screen – of a different surface and depth depending on the reader – which shows us and hides from us all that it has to say.Dans le présent article, le conte de Maupassant est étudié comme un complexe de formes, matérielles et signifiantes, qui génèrent, lors de l’activité du lecteur-récepteur, des représentations et des interprétations. L’analyse cherche à reconstruire certaines des opérations en jeu, qui sont de l’ordre de la figuration - selon la distinction qui est faite entre le figural et le figuratif - et de l’énonciation, plus précisément de la scénographie énonciative qui règle la narration. Après quelques remarques sur la présentation du conte, dans ses variantes d’édition, et sur ce qui le rapproche d’autres textes de Maupassant, notamment un récit de rêve, auquel il s’apparente par certains aspects, il est procédé à un repérage précis des étagements et des relais énonciatifs ainsi que des éléments de construction des intervalles spatio-temporels dans le récit. Celui-ci est centré sur une vision, quasi-hallucinatoire, qui apparaît comme une figure du sens majeure de l’écriture du conte : un corps coupé en deux. Les représentations figuratives élaborées dans la fiction, par contraste ou analogie, dessine une image du monde rapportée à une image du corps fantasmée aussi bien dans le paysage et les lieux que dans le physique et la physionomie des personnages. L’interprétation d’un imaginaire corporel du texte se double d’une attention portée au réseau de figures formelles qui constitue la trame du texte et qui s’organise en polarités sémantiques. La question qui est finalement posée, selon cette démarche dite de sémiologie interprétative, est d’un côté celle de la nature et de la fonction de ce qui serait le récit fictif d’un trauma, la guerre en l’occurrence, d’un autre côté celle de l’écran que forme ce récit fictif, écran de projection - de surface et de profondeur variable selon les lectures - qui tout à la fois nous montre et nous cache ce qu’il a à nous dire
