International audienceOn the basis of what takes place in Italian academic and administrative spheres between 1870 and 1920, this article proposes a restitution of the gradual nature of the process by which “return” became an extremely individualized statistical category in conjunction with cognitive, but also technical, administrative, and political questions. One of the major issues related to the statistical presentation of the phenomenon of returns was already present in the very possibility of using these numbers in the context of public policies meant to give a framework to migrations and to lend support to economic development.
