Architecture pénitentiaire. Mémoire historique : l’ambivalence des représentations

Considering the poor assessment of the few actions in favour of the preservation of this architectural heritage, one cannot but note that they haven’t met with a lot of concern, probably because of the repulsive images associated with them. The author tries to identify the mechanisms of the “making” of prison heritage, notably through the fundamental role of memory. Mainly based on the studying of Parisian prisons, she demonstrates how historical memory and prisoners’ memories are susceptible to influence the choice between cathartic erasing and preservation for commemorative purposes.Dans un contexte de déclassement accéléré des édifices pénitentiaires du xixe siècle, l’article interroge la capacité de notre société à considérer ce type d’architecture comme un patrimoine à préserver. Face au maigre bilan de l’action patrimoniale entreprise en faveur de ces bâtiments, force est de constater qu’ils ont peu éveillé l’intérêt, ce phénomène s’expliquant notamment par les imaginaires répulsifs qui leur sont associés. L’auteur tente alors d’identifier les mécanismes de la « fabrique » du patrimoine pénitentiaire, en s’attardant sur le rôle fondamental de la mémoire. S’appuyant principalement sur le cas des prisons parisiennes, elle démontre comment mémoire historique et mémoire des détenus sont susceptibles de faire pencher la balance dans le sens d’un effacement cathartique ou d’une préservation à titre commémoratif
