International audienceThis essay seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the ancient novel to Shakespearean tragicomedy by putting the emphasis on the bitter-sweet atmosphere of their conclusions, which are characterised, as in the novels, by multiple and nearly miraculous reunions. In general, Shakespeare was exploiting the theatricality already present in the prose romances. More specifically, he sometimes undoubtedly drew on novels other than those which served as direct sources in order to enhance his effects. This point is illustrated by juxtaposing _Pericles_ and _The Winter's Tale_ with elements found in _Clitophon and Leucippé_ and the version of the story of Apollonius of Tyre included by François de Belleforest in his _Histoire tr...
