International audienceAccording to the definition adopted for describing the city in the background document for the program on Manifestations of the City in the Arab and Muslim World, a human community can be designated as a city when it has a critical mass of very diverse populations and a high level of density. This contribution seeks to test this hypothesis by examining the situation in Egypt in the late 19th century. In a society composed mostly of Muslim and illiterate peasant farmers, the geographical distribution of residential and business areas for other (minority) populations allows the authors to put forward a definition of urban territory and of its more tenuous manifestations.
