Managers use accounting information to justify workforce reductions and social stakeholders use this information to judge whether these operations are socially acceptable. Managers can thus use this information to mislead the social stakeholder judgements. This dissertation aims at studying managers’ accounting choices in the context of workforce reductions. Based on the stakeholder agency theory and the political cost hypothesis, we first examine whether managers reduce reported earnings downward before workforce reduction announcements. Our sample consists of 123 workforce reduction announcements for 107 French listed firms in a six-year period 2007-2012.
