Environnement et occupation du sol dans la vallée de l’Euphrate syrien durant le Néolithique et le Chalcolithique

International audienceAt the beginning of the Holocene, the Euphrates valley experienced its last cycle of geomorphological evolution whose origin was mainly climatic. An alluvial formation filled up the bottom of the valley, basically modifying the possibilities for human occupation and land exploitation. The evolution of land use and human settlement may be observed in major phases, from the earliest Neolithic settlements of the 9th millennium along the edges of the valley, to the Chalcolithic villages built on the banks of the river. Gradually agricultural development could - or should - leave the narrow beds of the tributary wadis to spread for a more durable period to the Holocene floor, made accessible by the cutting of the river across the alluvial formation. Absolute dating for the stages of occupation of the valley floor are still lacking, but archaeological data have led to definition of the main outlines.La vallée de l'Euphrate a connu, au début de l'Holocène, son dernier « cycle » d'évolution géomorphologique d'origine essentiellement climatique. Une formation alluviale est venue tapisser le fond de vallée, changeant fondamentalement les conditions de son occupation et de son exploitation. L'évolution de la mise en valeur et du peuplement peut être suivie par grandes phases : depuis les premières implantations néolithiques du 9e millénaire, situées sur les marges de la vallée, jusqu'aux agglomérations chalcolithiques fondées directement sur les rives mêmes du fleuve. Petit à petit, la mise en valeur agricole a pu et a sans doute dû quitter les fonds étriqués des oueds affluents pour gagner, plus durablement, le fond holocène, rendu, accessible grâce à la dissection, par le fleuve, de la formation alluviale. La datation absolue des étapes de la conquête du fond de vallée manquent encore, mais l' archéologie permet déjà d'en fixer les grandes lignes
