Aux origines des idées factorielles. : Des théories aux méthodes statistiques

This article considers the ideas and concepts in factorial analysis through a historical overview of its methods. The origin of thisstatistical technique is to be found in the works of the psychologist Spearman who sought to identify factors of the mind, in otherwords, the agents contributing to various mental activities, during the early decades of this century. Spearman’s statistical toolswere progressively detached from the psychological realm where they had been created. Spearman’s theory of mental factorsbecame a general disembodied method. The new autonmous character of statistical formalisms resulted from criticism andresponse to criticism coming from mathematicians as well as psychologists, Thomson, Thurstone, and Hotelling in particular.The analysis of that development, running roughly from 1900 to 1940, sheds light on one of the forms of the influence ofmathematical formalism in social scienceA travers un historique des méthodes d'analyses factorielle, cet article propose une réflexion sur les idées et concepts qui lui sont liés. L'origine de cette technique statistique peut être trouvée dans les travaux du psychologue Spearman qui, durant les premières décennies du XXe siècle, cherchait à identifier les facteurs de l'esprit c'est-à-dire les agents participant aux diverses activités mentales. Progressivement, les outils statistiques utilisés par Spearman se dissocièrent des questionnements psychologiques qui lui avaient donné naissance. La théorie des facteurs de l'esprit de Spearman devint une méthode universelle désubstantialisée. Cette "autonomisation" des formalismes statistiques fut le résultat des critiques et des réponses à ces critiques, venues aussi bien des psychologues que des mathématiciens, notamment Thomson, Thurstone et Hotelling. La reconstruction de cette histoire, qui s'échelonne approximativement de 1900 à 1940, permet de saisir une des formes du rôle des formalismes mathématiques en sciences humaines
