LA PROBLEMATIQUE DE L'IDENTITE DANS LA PRODUCTION LITTERAIRE DES AUTEURS SOMALI D'EXPRESSION FRANCAISE ET ANGLAISE

The purpose of this thesis is to discern if and how literary works written in two different languages, by writers coming from the same culture, exhibit the same perspectives in regard to identity. It seeks to know especially, whether or not their mode of writing is fundamentally different. The literary text is viewed as an intertexte, that is, a text resulting from the intersection of other texts, being mainly here, Somali oral literature and the British and French colonial literature. It is also assumed that the reader plays an important role in the formation of the text. Identity as such, is examined in the light of otherness, space and time.Since the body of reference of Somali literature is oral, this thesis examines the meaning and the importance of orality, in order to understand better the transition from the oral to the written word. The main tenants of Somali identity are examined in the light of the role played by the names of ancestors and the people who are at the margins of society. The British and French colonial literature about Somali is compared in the wider context of their experience in colonizing Africa, as well as in the territories occupied by the Somalis. The structure of this thesis follows an historical perspective. It first presents the traditional Somali view of identity, then the colonizing view, and finally the contemporary view, which ends at the disintegration of the Somali State.La problématique de l'identité est examinée a la lurnière d'oeuvres écrites en deux langues différentes - le français et l'anglais - par des auteurs issus d'une même culture, La culture somali. La these présentée examine si et comment, les oeuvres de ces auteurs different dans leurs approches de l'identité et surtout si elles donnent lieu a des écritures fondamentalement différentes. Les textes étudiés sont compris comme des intertextes provenant de deux sources principales, Ia littérature orale somali et Ia littérature coloniale, oü le lecteurest considéré comme jouant un role essentiel dans La formation du texte. L'identité comme notion est abordée a travers trois outils conceptuels l'altérité, la spatialité et la temporalite.Etant donné que le corpus de référence de Ia littérature somali est oral, cette these examine la signification et 1 'importance de l'oralité pour mieux comprendre le passage a l'écrit. Les noms des ancétres et les personnes situées ala periphérie de la société, sont étudiés pour presenter les enjeux de l'identité somali. En cc qui concerne la littérature coloniale, perspectives francaises et britanniques sont comparées dans le cadre plus général de leur experience coloniale en Afrique et plus particulier de celle en terre somali. Le développement de la these est envisage dans une perspective historique, présentant en premier lieu le regard somali traditionnel, en second lieu, ceiui issu des colonisations et en dernier lieu, le regard contemporain dont, la destruction de l'Etat somalien est la derniêre étape
