International audienceThe article examines how scientific truth was established in the 19ht century on the basis of the analysis of a controversy relating to measuring the difference between the levels of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. The comparison between the way the results of the two levelling operations of the isthmus of Suez were greeted (the first in 1799 and the second in 1847) reveals a change in the definition of proof in the mid-century.
