Établir la vérité scientifique au XIXe siècle : la controverse sur la différence de niveau des deux mers (1799-1869)

International audienceThe article examines how scientific truth was established in the 19ht century on the basis of the analysis of a controversy relating to measuring the difference between the levels of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. The comparison between the way the results of the two levelling operations of the isthmus of Suez were greeted (the first in 1799 and the second in 1847) reveals a change in the definition of proof in the mid-century. There was indeed a shift from trust founded on the notoriety of the operators towards a mode of certifying facts that paid more attention to operating methods.L'article examine, à partir de l'analyse d'une controverse, comment les vérités scientifiques étaient établies au XIX siècle. La controverse est relative à la valeur de la différence de niveau entre la mer Rouge et la Méditerranée. La comparaison de l'accueil respectif réservé aux résultats de deux opérations de nivellement de l'isthme de Suez, l'une réalisée en 1799 et l'autre en 1847. met en évidence l'évolution, au milieu du siècle, du régime de la preuve. D'une confiance basée sur la notoriété des opérateurs, on passe en effet à un mode de certification des faits davantage attentif aux modes opératoires
