International audienceThe young Lothar of Segni, the future Pope Innocent III, spent some formative years in Bologna during the 1180's. This article offers a new perspective on the intellectual life in Bologna during these years. Using previously unknown glosses in Canon Law manuscripts, I put forward evidence that points to contentious theological debates. Lothar of Segni was a member of a group of young theologians that opposed Huguccio of Ferrare the leading teacher of Canon Law of his time. Huguccio also had a keen interest in theology. The relatively unknown Hubert of Pirovano must have been the main opponent of Huguccio.
