International audienceThe teachers of English who work in higher education in France are not prepared for teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Their field knowledge is mostly based on hands-on experience and on the very few in-service training courses available. This situation leads us to explore the place ESP training should have among teachers whose academic and professional backgrounds tend to differ significantly. Our exploration is based on a needs analysis for ESP teachers and lecturers through the study of job descriptions and teachers’ perception of ESP training, and an overview of the existing ESP degrees in France.
