International audienceDeauville (1859-1875), history of an enterpriseIn 1859-1860, Doctor Olliffe and Armand Donon (the Duke of Morny’s doctor and banker, respectively), being well informed about the local context, acquired 200 hectares of undeveloped marshland bordering Trouville, Normandy. Their objective was to build a new town organised around three landmarks bearing the Morny coat of arms: the casino on the seafront, the hippodrome serving the Pays d’Auge region, and the harbour basin near the railway station, with a railway line to Paris. The luxury villas built on the Terrasse and their distinguished owners helped create the brand image of an elegant resort town, a “Baden on the seaside, a French Brighton”.
