International audienceAt the end of the eighteenth century, the Alpine landscape becomes a subject for painters captivated by the "sublime" of geographical phenomena. Precipices and torrents of the Alps are becoming an inspiration fo r Romantics in harmony with their ideals. But beyond these spectacular works, the expansion of landscape painting in the nineteenth century favors the spread of idealized pictures of Switzerland in harmony with the development of tourism and of picturesque . These archetypal representations of the alpine landscape and of its inhabitants become a creative source for designers of printed fabrics.
